Periode fees and invoices
This guide explains what Periode charges and how you pay it. That depends on whether your payments go through Adyen:
- On Adyen: the transaction fee, which includes Periode’s percentage, is deducted from each payment. Other costs, such as SMS, are withdrawn from your Adyen balance once a month. You do not pay anything yourself.
- Not on Adyen yet: Periode sends you an invoice after each month.
VAT: Norwegian businesses only. Periode adds 25% VAT (MVA) to its fees, and on Adyen it is withdrawn from your Adyen balance with the monthly invoice. Businesses outside Norway pay no VAT to Periode, because reverse charge applies. See VAT.
The prices are listed at periode.no/pricing. If your agreement with Periode has other rates, the agreement applies.
Payments through Adyen
What is deducted from each payment
Every card payment has a transaction fee: a percentage of the amount plus a fixed amount per payment. The fee is deducted before the money reaches your Adyen balance, which is why a payment shows up in Adyen with a lower net amount than the customer paid.
The transaction fee covers card processing, bank fees and Periode’s percentage. There is no separate card fee, and Periode’s percentage is not invoiced separately. A chargeback has its own fee on top, see Chargebacks, fraud and notifications.
The percentage depends on the card, for example whether it was issued in your country or abroad. The pricing page lists the rates for each country.
Example
A customer pays 200 NOK with a Norwegian card, and the rate is 4.4% + 2 NOK per transaction:
| What happens | Amount |
|---|---|
| The customer pays | 200.00 NOK |
| The transaction fee is deducted: 4.4% of 200 NOK, plus 2 NOK | -10.80 NOK |
| Added to your Adyen balance | 189.20 NOK |
Norwegian businesses only: 25% VAT on the fee, 2.70 NOK in this example, is withdrawn later with the monthly invoice, so you keep 186.50 NOK.
The monthly invoice
At the start of each month, Periode makes an invoice for the month before. Find it in the Invoices table under Reporting > Adyen.
The invoice lists the month’s transaction fees as Platform commission and marks them as already paid, since they were deducted from the payments. What is left is the amount due: the SMS sent during the month and, for Norwegian businesses, VAT on the fees.
The amount due is withdrawn from your Adyen balance automatically. You do not need to pay the invoice or transfer any money. In the table, Status shows Due until the amount has been withdrawn, and Paid after.
Each monthly invoice has two download buttons:
- The invoice as a PDF. It documents the month’s fees for your bookkeeping.
- An Excel file with every payment in the month, showing its gross amount, fee and net amount, and a second sheet with the month’s payouts to your bank account. Use it to check the fee on a single payment.
SMS
SMS sent to your customers, such as reminders, cost a fixed price per SMS, see periode.no/pricing. SMS are only sent when Accept sending of SMS is on under Settings > Company.
On Adyen, the SMS sent in a month are added to that month’s invoice and withdrawn from your Adyen balance as part of the amount due.
Not on Adyen yet
If your payments do not go through Adyen yet, Periode sends you an invoice after each month. It includes Periode’s percentage of the month’s payments, the SMS sent during the month, and any fixed monthly price in your agreement. You pay it like any other invoice.
Payments that do not go through Adyen are always invoiced this way, also when the rest of your payments go through Adyen.
VAT
How VAT works on Periode’s fees depends on where your business is.
Norwegian businesses: 25% VAT
Periode adds 25% VAT (MVA) to its fees. On Adyen, the fees are deducted from the payments without VAT, so the VAT is collected afterwards: it is the amount due on the monthly invoice, withdrawn from your Adyen balance. It is calculated once a month on the total fees for the month, not payment by payment.
For example, a month with 100 payments like the one in the example gives this invoice:
| On the invoice | Amount |
|---|---|
| Platform commission | 1,080.00 NOK |
| VAT (25%) | 270.00 NOK |
| Invoice Total | 1,350.00 NOK |
| Already Paid | 1,080.00 NOK |
| Amount Due | 270.00 NOK |
Businesses outside Norway: reverse charge
Periode does not add VAT to its fees. On the monthly invoice, the VAT line reads VAT (Reverse Charge) with an amount of 0, and the invoice states that the VAT is to be accounted for by the recipient.
Reverse charge is the usual VAT rule when a business buys a service from a business in another country. The seller, here Periode, does not charge VAT. Instead you, the buyer, account for it: you calculate VAT on the fees at your own country’s rate and report it in your own VAT return. If your business can deduct VAT on its purchases, you normally deduct the same amount in the same return, so the net effect is zero. If it cannot, the VAT is a cost you pay to your own tax authority.
Either way, nothing extra is paid to Periode and no VAT is withdrawn from your Adyen balance. The rules differ between countries, so ask your accountant how to record it.
